Something I found interesting about the ACC is the importance of academics

and the need to compare themselves with the Ivy League. At least a handful of ACC school has some sort of "Ivy" title.

UNC - Public Ivy
UVA - Public Ivy
GT - Worthy Runner-up in Public Ivy
Pitt - Worthy Runner-up in Public Ivy
BC - Hidden Ivy
Duke - Hidden Ivy and Southern Ivy
Wake - Hidden Ivy

If the core of the ACC mantra is academics and a design to be on par with the Ivy League, then it at least raises the possibility that the ACC (at least at one time) may have been willing to sacrifice athletic success in order to stay true to academic success (aka maintain Ivy League standards).
